Alexis (アレクシス, Arekushisu) is an archnoble from Ehrenfest, who serves Wilfried as a guard knight.[4] He is the son of Giebe Kirnberger and a Leisegang noble.
Appearance
Alexis is around 15 years old and 172cm tall. He has reddish-orange hair and dark blue eyes. He was born in Autumn and has a Yellow ring.[2]
History
Alexis was born in the province of Kirnberger in Ehrenfest as the son of Giebe Kirnberger and his second wife, who was a Leisegang noble. In her keenness to escape Veronica's abuse, Alexis's mother had consulted with the first wife of Bonifatius directly and, with Bonifatius's support, married into Kirnberger.
To protect Alexis from Veronica's persecution, his parents and his father's first wife worked together to minimize his relationship to his Leisegang relatives in public. When visiting the archduke's castle before his winter debut, he was introduced as Giebe Kirnberger's son, and spent his time with his father and his father's first wife rather than his own mother. The family's caution paid off, as Veronica considered him not a member of the Leisegang faction, but merely the son of a neutral giebe. She only spoke to him once and overlooked him afterward.
Growing up, Alexis was told little of this and only learned the story by piecing it together himself. He never formed a strong opinion of Veronica, and struggled to empathize with either the Leisegang or Veronica factions.[5] After Veronica was imprisoned and her grandson Wilfried had his winter debut, Alexis was approached by Lamprecht and asked to serve as a guard knight for him, in part to increase the number of neutral and Leisegang nobles in his retinue.[1][5]
Story
At the Royal Academy
When Rozemyne and Wilfried enter their first year in the Royal Academy, Alexis is introduced as one of Wilfried's guard knights. He often plays gewinnen with Wilfried, who is eager to improve his skills to a level where he can compete with archduke candidates of other duchies. The much more experienced Alexis typically comes out on top.[6] After Rozemyne returns to Ehrenfest, Alexis is one of the apprentice knights training with Leonore in preparation for the Interduchy Tournament.[4]
At the end of Rozemyne and Wilfried's third year, Alexis graduates and is chosen as one of Ehrenfest's fifth-year honor students, along with Leonore.[7] He is also one of 20 students selected for the prestigious honor of performing in the graduation ceremony's sword dance.[8]
When Rozemyne discovers that it is possible for nobles to acquire new divine protections through prayer, the royal family gives special permission to the graduates of that year to redo the ritual at the end of their final year. Alexis participates in the ritual and manages to acquire the divine protection of both Angriff the God of War and Steifebrise the God of the Gale.[3]
After Graduation
In the aftermath of Ehrenfest's political purge, the Leisegang faction rises in power. Because many of the Leisegang nobles are bitterly resentful of Wilfried, he becomes isolated and unpopular despite his supposed position as the new aub. Insecure about Rozemyne's much stronger political base, and spurred on by his new retainer Barthold, he sends Alexis to visit his father in Kirnberger and ascertain whether Rozemyne is planning a bid for the archducal seat.
To Alexis's relief, Giebe Kirnberger reports that Rozemyne has no intention of becoming the next archduchess. However, he also notes that he finds Rozemyne a more compelling candidate, and challenges his son's belief that she is too unconventional for the role. As they discuss the matter, Alexis realizes that Wilfried's perspective is heavily influenced by his upbringing under Veronica and his attachment to his former head attendant Oswald, who was forced to resign during the purge.
Seeing Wilfried's increasing jealousy and paranoia frustrates Alexis so much that he "wishes for nothing more than to resign and return to Kirnberger." His father reprimands him for giving up so easily. He urges him to do what it takes to protect Wilfried, even from Barthold's influence, and drag him onto the right path. Failing that, he should gather enough evidence to have Wilfried disinherited and his retainers relieved of duty. With new motivation, Alexis returns to the castle.[5]
