Barthold (バルトルト, Barutoruto) is a mednoble apprentice scholar and one of Wilfried's retainers.[2]
Personality
Barthold is an attention seeker, who is always trying to be the center of any group he is part of and controlling of anyone of a lesser status than himself. He is practically a worshipper of Veronica, and as such, has a very strong dislike of Sylvester for imprisoning her.[2]
History
Prior to the purge of the former Veronica faction, Barthold's family was close to Muriella's family. As such he was considered a strong candidate for marriage for her. Whenever they were together, he would always try to command her around.[2]
Story
Part 5 Volume 1
In the beginning of Rozemyne's third year at the Royal Academy, the students are informed about the coming purge of the Veronica faction. Barthold decides to give his name to Wilfried. When he learns that Muriella intends to give hers to Rozemyne, he demands that she changes her mind and serve Wilfried as well, but with their parents soon to be out of power or dead, Muriella ignores his demands.
Several days later, the students learn that the purge claimed the lives of far fewer nobles than anticipated - only five of them have lost their parents and are thus required to give their names, including Barthold. Lady Rozemyne organizes a trip to the gathering spot, during which Barthold is able to acquire all the necessary ingredients to make his name-swearing feystone, and soon after, he gives his name to Wilfried.[2]
His sister Cassandra initially leans toward giving her name to Rozemyne, but Barthold manages to talk her into choosing Charlotte. To her, he mentions Rozemyne's poor health and how Charlotte will most likely marry into another duchy, implying the much better marriage prospects that his sister would have there, after moving with her lady, than in Ehrenfest, where everyone knows them to be the children of criminals, but inside the primary reason for his advice is that he is straight up disgusted by the thought of his sister serving a Leisegang.
His own decision to join Wilfried is partially fuelled by this same hated for the Leisegangs, and an even bigger hatred for Sylvester. While he doesn't hold any grudge against the three archduke candidates, he has no particular sympathy for them either.
Due to him vowing himself to Wilfried and talking his sister out of joining Rozemyne - and his arguments swaying other girls, who had been listening in, to do the same - he is taking into Oswald's confidence and the two conspire to build up Wilfried and rebuild the former Veronica faction around him in the future[1].
