Beruf is a title needed to become the foreman or forewoman of an independent workshop.[1] It is a proof of one's skills. One had the option to inherit a workshop, but without the "beruf" title, one's position within the guild was weakened and restricted. In addition to that, no new leherls or lehanges could be hired, and no lehange contracts could be renewed. Normally, workshops led by foremen or forewomen without the beruf title would wither away, however, private workshops funded by rich people, workshops with connection to influential people, or workshops outside a guild, as well as subsidiary workshops under a bigger workshop or store aren't necessarily in need of the beruf title to keep the workshop running.
The requirements to acquire the beruf certification varies between guilds.
- The Ink Guild requires the presentation of an outstanding research project. Each successful result can be awarded to one person only.[1]
- The Seamstress' Guild requires five orders for clothes to be finished in a single year and to have a noble customer.[2]
