Carya (カーヤ Kaaya) is a resident of Illgner.[1] She is the primary point of contact for Lutz and Gil when communicating with Giebe Illgner and others who live there while teaching and researching papermaking. She serves as servant in Giebe Illgner's mansion.[1]
Story
During the stay of the grey priests and Plantin Company personnel, Carya and the priest Volk fall deeply in love with each other and want to get married, though his position makes that a bit complicated since grey priests are not allowed to marry. They can, however, be sold to nobles.
Due to his love for his people, Giebe Illgner prepares to buy Volk, so he could marry his love, but due to his extensive skillset, his price is far in excess of what the local lord can afford. Rozemyne would like to enable Volk to marry right away, but because of how selling him below his price could effect all other grey priests and shrine maidens under her care, she reluctantly has to insist on the full price. Rozemyne indirectly encourages Volk and Carya to work hard through the winter to make paper to earn the necessary money, though neither the pair nor Giebe Illgner believe it possible to earn so much money in such a short time.[2]
Despite not expecting not to meet their goal in just a single year, Carya and Volk worked hard throughout the winter and following spring and against their expectations manage to earn the sum just like Rozemyne said they could, in even less than an entire year. The following summer, Giebe Illgner is able to buy Volk, when he visits the capital for the Starbind Ceremony.
Two years later, the happily married couple is expecting their first child.[3]
