— Cornelius to Rozemyne in Part 3 Volume 1, “Being My Little Sister’s Knight”
|
Cornelius (コルネリウス, Koruneriusu) is one of Rozemyne’s older brothers. He is the third son of Karstedt and Elvira and the younger brother of Eckhart and Lamprecht.
He is an archnoble and an apprentice guard knight, who serves Rozemyne as a retainer.
Appearance
Cornelius has dark brown,[4] “almost black”[5] eyes and bright green hair, which Rozemyne describes as “the colour of fresh leaves”.[6] His angled eyes resemble those of his mother, Elvira.[5]
Personality
While Cornelius is generally friendly and easygoing, he can be a bit overprotective. He often worries about Rozemyne’s health, scolds her when she acts recklessly, and warns her other retainers that she could “drop dead in an instant,” if they let their guard down.[7] However, he supports Rozemyne and respects her hard work to become familiar with noble society.[8]
Cornelius spent much of his childhood as an underachiever, but he develops a more serious and disciplined personality after Charlotte’s baptism. Driven by his regret at failing to protect Rozemyne, he dedicates himself wholeheartedly to his knight training with Bonifatius. According to Rihyarda, Cornelius does a good job at separating his personal relationship with Rozemyne from his professional duties as a retainer[9]
He has a sweet tooth and goes out of his way to be present whenever tasty food is being served.[10]
History
Because his father Karstedt is the commander of the Knight's Order and his brothers Eckhart and Lamprecht both serve as guard knights, Cornelius "never once considered becoming an attendant or scholar.[11] However, he was equally reluctant to follow in his family’s footsteps as guard knights to the archducal family.[8] As a result, he struggled to find a goal in life and only did the bare minimum expected of him as an archnoble.[12]
Along with the rest of his family, Cornelius suffered under the feud between his father's second wife Trudeliede and third wife Rozemary.[8] Because Cornelius was the only family member who stayed home with Elvira during the day, he was often forced to listen to her complain about the conflict, as well as listen to her talk about fashion trends and Ferdinand.
