— Damuel to Rozemyne in Part 2 Volume 3 Chapter 6: Punishment for the Knight’s Order and My Future
|
Damuel (ダームエル, Daamueru) is a layknight, who serves as Rozemyne’s retainer and lead guard knight at the temple.
He was one of two knights tasked with protecting Myne during the trombe extermination mission. As punishment for failing in his duties, he was demoted and assigned to serve her as a guard knight.
Appearance
Damuel has gray eyes that often express his emotions and plain brown hair.[3] Rozemyne thinks he has a kind and gentle voice.[4]
Personality
As a laynoble, Damuel spent most of his early life accommodating higher-status nobles, which gave him a helpless outlook. Myne thinks he seems like the kind of guy who's "just asking to be bullied.”[3]
After being punished for his mistakes during the trombe extermination and serving as Myne’s guard, he developed a stronger sense of confidence and a willingness to stand his ground against higher-status nobles. He also became more open-minded toward commoners and gained a greater appreciation for Myne’s innovative products and business sense.
Damuel trained with Bonifatius for several years along with Angelica, Brigitte and Cornelius, which gave him a more mature and experienced demeanor.[5]
Despite being a very mild-mannered person in general, Damuel does have an utterly ruthless side to him, as was revealed when a hostile soldier held a seeming grey priest hostage, who was in truth one a fellow hostile soldier disguised in stolen cloth. Utterly confident in his ability to recognize all of Ehrenfest's grey priests, Damuel simply strode forward and stabbed right through the pretend hostage and thus incapacitated them both in a single move.[6]

Skills and Abilities
Magical
- Mana Affinities: Damuel has an elemental affinity for Wind.[7]
- Mana Affinities: Damuel only has a natural elemental affinity for Wind[7], but gained an additional affinity for Light through divine protection of a subordinate of the Goddess of Light.[1]
- Divine Protection: At the Royal Academy, Damuel gained only the divine protection of Schutzaria. When re-doing the acquisition ritual as an adult in the Ehrenfest Temple however, she also gained the protection of Liebeskhilfe, Dregarnuhr and Jungereise.[1]
- Mana Capacity: Thanks to the Rozemyne Mana Compression Method, Damuel's mana capacity has grown to equal that of a mednoble, a remarkable feat for a laynoble.
- Mana Efficiency: Due to having grown up with a very small mana capacity, Damuel is very skilled at preserving mana and using precisely the minimum required amount for a task.
- Mana Sensing: Laynobles like Damuel can sense small amounts of mana that go unnoticed by higher-ranking nobles, a skill that is well-suited for tracking and scouting. Impressively, he still retains that sensitivity even after raising his mana capacity to mednoble levels.
- Highbeast: Damuel's highbeast takes the shape of a winged horse.
Non-Magical
- Clerical: Due to coming from a family of scholars, Damuel is quite skilled at paperwork and mathematics, despite being a knight. After he trained under the demanding Ferdinand, his skills even surpassed his brother's - a trained and practicing scholar - while still performing his duties as a knight.[8]
- Education: Damuel is quite good at teaching other people, something his fellow guard knight Angelica was able to greatly benefit from. She also holds him in very high regard for his help.[8]
Trivia
- Karstedt was also very impressed with Damuel for lasting such a long time against Count Bindewald, due to the significant mana difference.
- Damuel's name was meant to be Samuel, but Miya Kazuki, the author, hit "D" instead of "S" by accident and just rolled with it. The Quof, translator at J-Novel Club, asked the author if she wanted him to correct it in the translation, but she requested that he keeps it the same.[9]
- Damuel likes sweet desserts, especially parue cakes.
- Damuel spent one-and-a-half years to pay off the debts incurred when paying the compensation for Myne's new ceremonial robe. Rozemyne was promoted to High Bishop and stopped wearing that robe almost a year before he finished repayment.
- Ever since his failed romance with Brigitte, Damuel's inability to get a marriage partner has since become a running gag in series.
- According to Miya Kazuki, his circumstances made him as undesirable as a man with no money and property, who holds a criminal record and is constantly at risk of retrenchment on earth.[9]
