Damuel (ダームエル Daamueru) is a lesser noble who serves in Ehrenfest's Knight Order.
He was one of two knights assigned to protect Myne during the trombe raid. However, he failed to stop Shikikoza from harassing her due to their difference in rank. As his punishment, he was demoted and currently serves as Myne's bodyguard.
Personality
Damuel is a friendly and earnest person who takes the initiative to talk to Myne during the trombe extermination. However, while he has good intentions and a kinder personality than his fellow knight Shikikoza, he lacks the confidence to stand up to those who outrank him.
Story
When Myne goes with the Knight's Order on a trombe raid, Damuel and his fellow knight Shikikoza are assigned to protect her. Not realizing that Myne is a commoner, Damuel chats with her during the battle and expresses his admiration for Ferdinand's skill in battle, saying wistfully that he hopes Ferdinand will return to the Knight's Order someday.
However, Shikikoza begins harassing and threatening Myne. While Damuel initially tries to intervene, he is cowed when Shikikoza reminds him of their difference in rank. In the end, he is unable to stop Myne from getting injured and triggering the growth of a second trombe.
Damuel rushes to help her, but he's slowed down by having to cast the God of Darkness blessing on his weapon first. He when he's finished, he realizes that the trombe is healing itself, and has to wait until Ferdinand has healed Myne's wound. Then Damuel works with the rest of the knights to free her.
Afterward, Damuel is called to give his testimony about the incident. However, he is intimidated by Shikikoza's position and stays silent, leaving Myne to give her testimony to Karstedt instead. When the story is revealed, he admits that he failed to protect Myne and apologizes sincerely for his mistakes. Later, Myne asks Karstedt to reduce Damuel's punishment, since he tried to stop Shikikoza as much as he could.
Thanks to Myne's words Damuel escapes the death-penalty, but is sentenced to pay a quarter of the cost of Myne's replacement ceremonial robes and demoted to apprentice knight for a full year. He is also assigned as Myne's bodyguard, which means he has to regularly enter the temple and lower city, places most nobles have excessive disdain for. To not stand out so much in the lower city he gets a set of second-hand clothes from Myne.
Trivia
- Damuel's name was meant to be Samuel, but Miya Kazuki hit D instead of S by accident and just rolled with it. The translator at J-Novel Club asked the author if she wanted him to correct it in the translation, but she requested that he keep it the same.
