Guild Cards are magic tools given out to members of the Merchant's Guild.
General Information
Guild Cards are magic tools, but unlike the majority of their kind, they were made to be used by commoners and thus do not require the owner to be able to manipulate mana to be used.
There is a similar looking and functioning card used among nobles, which is likely the original from which the commoner-version was derived.[1]
Guild cards are registered to their owners mana and thus can not be used by anyone else. This registration happens by putting a drop of blood upon the card when it is first handed out.[2]
Magic tools for commoners are generally made by layscholars. Most magic items for commoners also need regular charging with mana by the same nobles,[3] though in this regard guild cards are an exception, since they do not seem to need charging, or are charged by alternate means not requiring a noble. How the cards are able to function without being directly charged by a mana-wielder has not been explained.
Purpose and Usage
Guild cards serve as a proof of membership of the Merchant's Guild.
They are also used as a key to provide access to the third and above floors of the Merchant's Guild building and act as a convenient way to store and transfer lion from one card holder to another.
When two individuals wish to make a transaction, they come to an agreement on the price and then tap their cards together, at which point the transaction is made and Lyon is transferred from one member to the other. This makes a sound like a string being plucked.[2]
Registration
Guild cards are usually given to apprentices upon signing a contract with a store, though there are also temporary registrations meant for children of merchants, so they can help out in their parents' stores and start to learn their craft even before their baptism.[4]
