Myne's Italian recipes.
The Italian Restaurant is a high class eatery that serves the wealthy in the lower city. To become a customer one needs a recommendation of an existing customer. The tagline of the restaurant is that "Even Nobles Eat Here".
Location and Description
The restaurant is located just north east of the city centre.[1]
From the outside, it looks the same as the surrounding buildings, however, the inside has been modelled after the orphanage director's chambers as these were the quarters Benno was most familiar with.[2] When entering, the first room is a reception and waiting area with doors to the kitchen on the left and dining area on the right. There is also another room usually used as an extra waiting room that can be converted into an extra eating area for staff members, if required. This was where the guard knights of the Archduke and his noble companions ate during his visit.[3]
The main dining room has a wainscot running around the outside with various decorations on it. The kitchen is bigger than Myne's kitchen in the orphanage director's chambers, but is furnished identically to Myne's kitchen, using the same tools.
When attending, the customers bring their own plates and cutlery in the manner of the nobles, though the platters and cutlery that are used as decorations in display cases can also be lent out to customers, should they prefer it over bringing their own.
Story
After the pound cake taste testing hosted by Freida and the Othmar Company, Benno declared that he would make all of the sweets recipes that Myne knew.[4] Myne persuaded Benno that this would be a bad idea and talked him into opening a restaurant serving Italian food instead.[5] Benno hired the chef Hugo with Ella as his assistant, who were trained in the orphanage director's kitchen using Myne's written-down recipes, read and instructed by Fran. While Myne would have preferred to personally interact with them, it was deemed unseemly for nobles to directly interact with commoner staff members and more stressful for the two chefs.[6] During the construction, Benno asked Myne to bring Fran with her, and she suggest to bring Rosina as well, who has different opinions, to discuss how to decorate the interior.[2] They also discussed the layout to help the servers and the use of napkins instead of tablecloths as this is how nobles dine.
It took about a year to finish the Italian Restaurant, and this was rushed by Sylvester wanting to eat there as soon as possible.[7] In order to facilitate this, he invites Gustav to become a co-owner for his connections and financial support, who in turn involved his daughter Freida in the venture. This has the added benefit of also getting Freida's personal chef Leise and her expertise in confectionaries on board.
After hosting a test run with Sylvester, Karstedt, and Ferdinand,[3] the restaurant was closed due to further preparations for over a month. The chefs taught the recipes to the head chefs of the three nobles, after they paid Rozemyne's fee, whilst the restaurant was closed in that month.[8]
The Italian Restaurant was finally opened by hosting a number of rich store owners. Rozemyne attended briefly in the beginning to formally welcome everyone and put her weight behind both the reputation and rules and left before it was time to eat, so the presence of such a high ranking noble wouldn't prevent the customers from enjoying their meal in a relaxed manner.
When Sylvester starts to push for the expansion of the printing industry Benno largely retreats from the running of the restaurant, becoming something of a silent partner, so he can concentrate fully on the other tasks pushed on him by the archduke. This leaves the restaurant to in essence being run by Freida.
