— Johann to Myne in Part 2 Volume 3, Chapter 2: Johann’s Task
|
Johann (ヨハン Yohan) is an exceptionally skilled blacksmith in Ehrenfest. Myne considers him to be the Gutenberg of metal letter types.[2]
Appearance
Johann is a "younger guy" with bright orange hair that he ties back in a low ponytail.[3] His eyes are reddish-brown.
Personality
Compared to his fellow smith Zack, Johann is quieter and more serious. He is not good at talking to clients,[4] and often frustrates non-craftsmen with his long and detailed lists of questions about each design. He enjoys challenging himself to create sophisticated and complex machinery, even when it means taking a bigger risk that the end product won't work.[5]
Johann is not good at dealing with other people. At Haldenzel when the local smiths fail to reach the necessary standards for metal letter types, he only sorted the individual types of sufficient quality from those that failed, but didn't explain why they failed, leading to confusion and outright anger on part of the local craftsmen. Thankfully, Rozemyne was able to diffuse the situation by calming everyone and explaining in detail what exactly was wrong with the failed types and what consequences it would have if they had been used in a printing press, advising Johann to give similar explanations in the future.
Heeding her advice, Johann was able to improve his communications skills and was able to avoid similar situations from cropping up when he visited Groschel.[6]

Skills and Abilities
- Smithing. Johann is a top-class smith who has a remarkable ability to precisely replicate almost any design, provided he is given detailed enough instructions.[7] Unfortunately, his tendency to ask lots of questions often frustrates his customers, who interpret it to mean that he can't do anything without tedious hand-holding.[3]
