Justus (ユストクス, Yusutokusu) is a noble scholar who specializes in gathering information. He is a trusted associate of Ferdinand.

Appearance

Justus has gray hair and brown eyes. He has an "ordinary" appearance that helps him blend in with crowds when gathering information.

Personality

Justus enjoys gathering information, rumors, and anything new and unusual. He doesn't hesitate to go into places most nobles avoid, or dress in unusual disguises, to conduct his investigations.

History

Justus served Ferdinand as a scholar in the past, and worked closely with Eckhart. Currently, he helps out on an unofficial basis.

Story

In the Season 1 OVA, the Head Priest Ferdinand orders Justus and his colleague Eckhart to collect information on Myne in downtown Ehrenfest.

Justus ends up leading the investigation while Eckhart is too nauseated by the filthy downtown surroundings to be of much help. However, he doesn't have much luck throughout his mission. First, he visits the Gilberta Company, but Mark notices him and he has to leave. Then he attempts to ask Lutz's mother about Myne, but she finds him suspicious and tells him to get lost. Finally, he happens upon Ralph, Fey, and Tuuli who are returning from foraging in the woods. They provide him some information about Myne, but eventually become suspicious when he asks about the Myne Studio.

Justus and Eckhart regroup and try again. They tail Gunther and Otto to a bar, where the two men discuss Corinna's pregnancy. However, Eckhart once again becomes sick and they decide to break into the Merchant's Guild instead. After that, they gather information from the craftsmen who did business with Myne through the Gilberta Company.

After sending an ordonnanz to Ferdinand with their report, Justus insists on visiting the downtown market with Eckhart in tow. There, he sees a merchant who has a book on his shelf and asks to see it. The merchant happily allows it, mentioning that the only other person to be interested in the book since a strange girl begged to be allowed to touch it. Interested, Justus purchases the book and takes it with him.

Justus later makes a cameo appearance in Episode 15, which takes place concurrently with the OVA. Benno correctly guesses that the person investigating Myne downtown and the person who broke into the Merchant's Guild are the same individual, and he begins planning to suppress information about Myne for her safety.

Translation Notes

• His name was first translated as "Eustachius," but was adjusted to "Justus" in Part 3 Volume 2. The Ascendance of a Bookworm anime uses the translation "Eustachius".

Trivia

• The book Justus purchases at the end of Episode 14.1 is the first book Myne saw when she woke up in the new world. It originally belonged to the family of Heidemarie, the deceased wife of Justus's colleague Eckhart.
