Liz (リーゼ, Riize) was Benno's childhood friend and fiancée, with their relationship initially rooted in a competitive rivalry as merchant apprentices that blossomed into a profound and genuine love.
History
In the bustling world of merchants, Benno and Liz initially stood as rivals, both undergoing the trials of apprenticeship. As they navigated the intricate world of commerce, a gradual shift occurred, and the rivalry evolved into a deep and genuine love. This love led to their engagement, a promising union that held dreams of a shared future.
However, fate took a cruel turn, as Liz succumbed to the relentless grip of the Devouring before their vows could be exchanged.[2] The Devouring, a mysterious and often fatal ailment, struck Liz after she had passed through the threshold of puberty, revealing its harrowing symptoms. This unexpected tragedy left Benno devastated, haunted by the anguished screams of his beloved during the relentless onslaught of Devouring attacks.
The impact of Liz's untimely death lingers in Benno's memories, an indelible mark on his heart that shapes his perspective and actions.[3]
In the short story "Renewal Of Contracts and Relationships," written from Liz's perspective, their relationship is explored further. Amidst a disagreement banishing them to the storeroom, Liz contemplates the decision to renew her contract with the Gilberta Company. Surprisingly, Benno, initially seen as a rival, encourages her to stay, revealing a more profound connection.[4]
Trivia
- She was one of the few people who could fight Benno head-on on equal terms or even win the argument.
- She and Benno would often hide behind the store and act like adults while planning little plots.[5]
- Looking at her Japanese name リーゼ and how most names of citizens of Ehrenfest look German, her name could also have been "Liese", which may look a bit too close to Leise.
- Benno's late fiancée, Liz, silently grappled with the Devouring, a rare ailment. Her symptoms, triggered by the condition, emerged after she had gone through puberty and become engaged to Benno due to her low mana levels. Liz's story is not extensively explored in Myne's narrative, but Miya Kazuki said she would hold a significant role in an account centered around Benno's experiences.[6]
- Liz faced a dilemma about renewing her lehange contract at the Gilberta Company when she turned thirteen, highlighting the intertwining of employment and marriage decisions for commoners in Yurgenschmidt.[4]
