— Otto to Lutz in Part 1 Volume 1, Chapter 24: Meeting with the Merchant
|
Otto (オットー Ottoo) is the current head of the Gilberta Company. He is married to Corinna, the younger sister of Benno, and they have a daughter named Renate.
He previously served under Gunther as a soldier at the city gate, where he taught Myne how to read and write.
Appearance
Otto is "young looking soldier with dark brown hair, and gentle, calm brown eyes."[3]
Personality
Retaining his merchant-like qualities, he often barters in his dealings with others.
He is very devoted to his wife and daughter and will praise them for great length of time with minimal prompting, much to the annoyance of most listeners.
History
He was in the traveling merchant trade before becoming a soldier, and he still has connections with merchants. Otto originally planned on buying citizenship in a city near Frenbeltag, where he would have to pay less due to his parents owning a store there. This discount would have left him enough to open a store of his own.
However, he fell in love with Corinna at first sight. To prove he was serious, he spent all of his savings to buy citizenship in Ehrenfest and used his connections to obtain a job as a soldier. Despite the possibility of drawing the guildmaster's ire, since he was trying to arrange a marriage between Corinna and one of his sons, that would lead to him never being able to do official business as a merchant again, Otto believed marrying Corinna would be well worth it.[4]
After the wedding, he moved in with Corinna on the third floor of the building which houses the Gilberta Company's store.
Despite officially working as a soldier, his duties were primarily taking care of all kinds of paperwork, as well as trading for supplies, in which his connections and experiences from his previous career as a traveling merchant helped a great deal. At heart, he never stopped being a merchant first and foremost. His duties also include teaching the new apprentices the basics of reading, writing, and math.
Due to being one of only few soldiers in his team who is both good at writing and math, he ends up doing practically all the paperwork, leading to him regularly being overworked during the busier times of the year.
He was often asked to train helpers for his math work, but refused the vast majority of them on the argument that it would be a waste of time trying to teach idiots.[5]
