This is the first volume of the Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 2 light novel adaption written by Miya Kazuki and illustrated by You Shiina and overall the first volume of the Ascendance of a Bookworm light novel adaption.
Synopsis
With her baptism ceremony complete, Myne begins work in the temple as an apprentice shrine maiden. Awaiting within is what she always wanted: a room full of books! But her new life isn't quite the dream she was hoping for; she's surrounded by nobles who scorn her commoner origins, and even her own servants are causing her trouble. On top of that, she has to constantly battle the weakness of her own body. But with her love for books burning in her heart, she gives her all to her new apprentice duties. Summary
After a month of preparation work for Myne's apprenticeship at the temple as an apprentice blue shrine maiden, Myne is allowed to begin. After the fealty ceremony, she is assigned three attendants: Fran, a former attendant of the High Priest, Delia and Gil. Thanks to the High Bishop, holding a grudge against Myne, Delia was supposed to act as a spy while Gil was chosen to cause Myne as much trouble as possible.
After taking care of her blue shrine maiden duties, such as mana donation, she heads to the book room to read. Ignorant of the ways of the temple, she skips lunch to read books, leaving only once Lutz arrives to pick her up. She heads to Benno so that he can help her take care of her donation to the temple. Upon her arrival, she sees how much effort Lutz is putting into his merchant apprenticeship. Benno reminds her, that as a blue shrine maiden, she is to act like a noble, which made her realise her shortcomings and encourages her to change for the better. Due to miscommunication between Myne and her attendants, the meeting for dealing with the donation is to be held earlier than anticipated by Benno, and so Benno, Mark and Myne hurry to the temple.
Upon their arrival, Myne assumes a noble persona. Fran, now more comfortable due to Myne adopting a noble's attitude, guides them to the High Priest's office, where he and Benno begin a meeting to discuss both donations and Myne's character. Near the end of the meeting, Myne collapses from physical stress, her mana donation and her malnutritioned state.
Due to her attendants not having outside clothes, she buys them some. When she returns to the temple accompanied by Lutz, her ignorance of temple matters causes Gil to lash out. Myne falls over which causes Lutz to fight back, while Myne learns more things about her new environment and the dire situation Gil is in during the argument. After Myne provocatively changes into her blue shrine maiden apprentice robes in the High Priest's Room, she is assigned the orphanage director's chambers, which she commands Gil to clean in exchange for food and shelter. Fran and Gil are presented with outdoor wear and leave to visit the lower city with Myne and Lutz. Gil begins to see Myne as his master.
As the orphanage director's chambers have a kitchen, Benno uses the opportunity to send chefs to train there for his planned restaurant. Delia begins to do her work as well. After some time, Myne first experiences the condition of the orphanage, and, by Gil's plea and her own conscience, she suffers some emotional turmoil as she considers what to do. After a secret talk with the High Priest in his hidden room, it is decided that she would officially assume the position of the orphanage director and improve their situation through providing labour using the Myne Workshop. The orphanage is cleaned and Myne organises a cooking class as well as rewarding them for their efforts.
Myne, feeling the need for a way to take notes and the write things down, invents the diptych and meets with Johann the smith to create a stylus for it. In addition, she orders boards to make a karuta set and gives the duty of drawing the art to Wilma.
Myne secures permission to hold a Star Festival for the orphanage and they go out to collect taue fruit. They discover that taue fruit, when inserted with mana, turns into a trombe and cut them down for paper-making, damaging the white tiles slightly.
Lutz's family problems continue to trouble Benno, Lutz, and Myne with them denying Lutz to travel outside of the city. In addition, the High Priest punishes Myne by placing her in the repentance chamber for the damaged tiles. Myne gets sick and there are no mattresses on hand.
As Lutz's family life becomes unbearable for him, he runs away from home. While his family worries, Myne, overwhelmed with her thoughts on what she could do to help Lutz, reveals her problems to the High Priest, who offers Myne the option of adoption through the orphanage and sends a letter of invitation to Lutz's family as well as Benno.
The meeting ends in favourable terms for both sides, clearing misunderstandings for all participants. Lutz decides to return back home after understanding his family's good intentions. Myne, crying with relief, uses the High Priest's handkerchief, and Myne learns his name from the embroidery.
