— Philine in Short Story Collection 1, Chapter 21: Philine — I Serve Lady Rozemyne
|
Philine (フィリーネ, Firiine) is a laynoble apprentice scholar who serves as one of Rozemyne's retainers. Rozemyne is also her sponsor and de facto guardian.[3]
She is the older sister of Konrad.
Appearance
Philine is a cute girl with honey-coloured hair and grass-green eyes, a bit on the smaller side for her age. In Part 4 Volume 1, she is about 140 cm (4’7”) tall.[4]
Personality
Philine has a shy and humble personality, but can get rather animated when books or sweets are involved. She is also a hard worker, managing her duties as a retainer, her studies under Hartmut, and her side job transcribing stories, while also keeping up with the demanding pace of her classes.
History
Philine was born to a laynoble family as the daughter of Kashick and his previous wife, Theresia.[5] Shortly after her little brother Konrad was born, their mother passed away. However, Philine fondly remembered the stories her mother used to tell her.
Kashick later remarried a woman named Jonsara, who became Philine's and Konrad's stepmother. When she first came into the family, she got along well with the children. It was also Jonsara who taught Philine to play the Harspiel and praised her after her performance at her noble debut.[6] However after the birth of her son, Jonsara's behaviour changed drastically. The change in her step-mother after the birth was so drastic that to Philine it seemed like she became an entirely different person.[7]
At one point, she tried to take away Philine's compiled stories, but her father returned them shortly after since they were written on paper that was gifted to Philine by Lady Rozemyne, and it would be unwise to disrespect a gift from the archduke's family.

Retainers
Attendants
- Isberga - An attendant serving Philine at the Royal Academy.[8] Iseberga is only temporaryily contracted to serve Philine during her royal academy terms.[7]
Due to distancing herself from her family, Philine currently has no attendants or retainers of any kind outside the Royal Academy, but is able to make due thanks to living with Rozemyne's other female retainers and them helping each other with dressing and such.[9]
Skills and Abilities
Magical
- Highbeast: Philine is more skilled at handling her highbeast than most attendants and scholars her age and rank, among other things being able to summon it surprisingly fast for a second year student. Rozemyne thinks this is due to a combination of natural talent and practice from commuting between the temple and castle so often.[10]
- Divine Protection: Apart from the expected protection of Geduldh, Philine also managed to gain the protection of Mestionora despite neither having an affinity for Wind, nor having Schutzaria's protection. This is likely due to working exceptionally hard as an apprentice scholar, often earnestly praying to her, and helping with the paper work of the temple.[1]
Non-Magical
- Language: While working for Lady Rozemyne, Philine has learned to read old and obscure dialects that few people in Ehrenfest are able to read these days.
Trivia
- Among all characters introduced, Philine is one of the only two female nobles that tie their hair into two tails, the other being Hannelore. Coincidentally, both of them are book lovers that Rozemyne quickly became fond of.
