Rico is an orphan or Apprentice Gray Priest in Ehrenfest's Temple.[1]
Story
Concurrent with Part 2 Volume 1
Rico is one of the smallest and youngest children locked up in the temple orphanage's basement, at the time Myne becomes an Apprentice Shrine Maiden. His days consist of just languishing of his pile of hay, looking out window, too high up for the children to reach, tracking time by the passage of the sun and waiting for divine gifts to arrive in the cellar. Since the children are arranged by age, with the oldest staying the closest to the main entrance door, and the youngest the furthest away, Rico has a much harder time getting food, than the older ones. By the time the divine gifts make it all the way to him, barely a few scraps are left and even they are often stolen by the stronger children. One day before Myne first sneaks an extra basket of bread into the cellar, Rico is in such a weakened state, that he is barely able to raise himself up onto the chair. When his single piece of soup-soaked bread is knocked from his hand, when an older and taller boy tries to steal it, he dives after it and eats it off the filthy floor and swallowed it down, with all the grit, hay and whatever else clung to it.
When Gil and Myne come to the cellar for the first time, due to being among the smallest, Rico is closest to the backdoor and eagerly devours a loaf of bread, which Gil had dropped, not even noticing or caring that the bump he heard was Sister Myne fainting and crashing to the floor.
The next day, when Gil comes again, the apprentice gray priest makes sure that the food is shared equally, that the older children do not steal from the younger and weaker ones and that everyone uses their spoons, rather than touching the food with their dirty hands. At the end of the day, Rico is sated fro the first time since he can remember and the usually deathly quiet cellar, has some quiet conversation between the children, equally for the first in a long time.[1]
