History
Werkestock was a significant greater duchy due to its involvement in the civil war. The aftermath of the conflict resulted in Werkestock undergoing a substantial and punitive purge of nobles by the new king and Klassenberg. Notably, the Aub Ahrensbach's second wife, originally hailing from Werkestock, faced execution due to her familial ties to the defeated duchy. Her sons were spared from execution, but only on the condition that they were subjected to a reduction in status to that of archnobles.[2]
This reduction in status triggered a succession crisis within Ahrensbach, which struggled with a shortage of archduke candidates. The intricate political landscape further unfolded as the archduke attempted to mitigate this crisis by adopting one of his first wife's grandchildren, aiming to raise them as the next aub. However, the complexities of Werkestock's history, the consequences of the civil war, and the subsequent purge contribute to a dynamic and intricate political atmosphere.[3] The repercussions of Werkestock's involvement in the civil war resonated across the overarching plot, shaping the fates of characters and influencing the political and social dynamics within the broader world.
Despite being a scholarly duchy more focussed on research and known for their Knights and Attendants "of the Quill," Werkestock was strong enough to take on both Klassenberg and Drewanchel simultaneously while also keeping Dunkelfelger neutral. Prior to the start of the civil war, Werkestock held important footholds in the Royal Academy and Royal Palace, with its nobles serving as librarians and other administrative duties. Once the civil war ended, Drewanchel ventured to fill the research void Werkestock left behind.[4]
Geography
After the civil war, and its purge of nobles, Werekestock became a defunct duchy. However, as the new king Trauerqual did not possess a Grutrissheit, duchy lines could not be redrawn. It became a barren land almost devoid of mana. As a temporary solution, the duchy was split into two where the bottom half was placed under Dunkelfelger Management and the top half placed under Ahrensbach Management, but with the foundation of the duchy itself remaining empty, any attempt to fill the land with mana by the priests of the respective duchies were greatly hampered, resulting in fertility of the lands being near zero.
Werkestock's Temple, and presumably Werkestock City, was located in the top half, under Ahrensbach's management. It's priests, shrine maidens and chalices were relocated to Ahrensbach's Temple.[4]
Once the Lanzenave invasion was defeated and Eglantine was crowned the Zent, the bottom half of Werkestock is merged into Dunkelfelger while the top half became a part of the newly founded duchy of Blumenfeld.[5][6]
Story
Part 5 Volume 4
Lord Gieselfried, Aub Ahrensbach, faced challenges in securing alliances and marriages for his family. With the death of his second wife due to her familial ties with the former Werkestock archducal family, and her sons being reduced to archnoble status created a succession crisis in Ahrensbach. Causing focus to shift to his granddaughter Letizia's engagement and finding a groom for Detlinde. The engagement of Lord Wilfried to Lady Rozemyne complicates matters, prompting strategic considerations to avoid internal discord.
The influence of Lady Rozemyne and the archducal family from Ehrenfest raises questions about their impact on trends in the region. Gieselfried grapples with unreliable information from Professor Fraularm, emphasizing the need for accurate intelligence to navigate diplomatic challenges.
The introduction of Lord Ferdinand adds intrigue, with Gieselfried recognizing his potential as a first-in-class archduke candidate who entered the temple.[3]
Part 5 Volume 5
Aub Ahrensbach's second wife, originally from Werkestock, played a significant role in the loss of archduke candidates for Ahrensbach. Following the civil war, a large-scale purge resulted in the execution of Ahrensbach's second wife, who was the little sister of Aub Werkestock. Although her sons were initially slated for execution, Aub Ahrensbach's desperate pleas spared their lives on the condition that they would be reduced to the status of archnobles. The succession crisis in Ahrensbach intensified as they were granted a portion of Werkestock's land, enlarging their duchy. Aub Ahrensbach attempted to increase archduke candidates by adopting his daughters' children, with Lady Letizia being the only adopted granddaughter remaining as a candidate. The archduke's younger brother, despite having an abundance of children, cannot solve the crisis due to a tradition in Ahrensbach where all other members of the archducal family lose their status. Lady Georgine's oldest daughter and Lady Detlinde are no longer archduke candidates.[2]
